Waves Day 6

Polarization, Diffraction, and Refraction
When light waves change direction, we get really cool colors

What: SWBAT describe the behavior of an wave that is being polarized, diffracted, or refracted.
How: Students will create a comic strip to show at least 2 of the different ways that light waves change direction.
Why: To be critical thinkers, we need to extend our knowledge of waves to the ways they interact with their environment.

Agenda
1. Do Now
2. Brainpop and quiz
3. Bill Nye - Light optics
4. Light optics vocab notes
5. Exit Slip

Waves Day 5

Light
Objective
What: Students will recognize that light is broken up into many different types of electromagnetic radiation
How: Students will answer benchmark questions correctly about the different types of waves in the electromagnetic spectrum
Why: To be life long learners, we need to be able to understand all the different forms that light takes, and all the ways we see, feel or hear it in the world.

Agenda
1. Do Now
2. Brainpop
3. Bill Nye - Light and Color
4. Light reading
5. Exit Slip

Waves Day 4

Seismic Waves
comic credit: www.wired.com

Objective
What: SWBAT synthesize examples of the two types of Seismic Waves.
How: Students will synthesize a comic strip demonstrating how the two types of waves transfer energy, using the terms transverse, longitudinal, wave and transfer of energy.
Why: To be critical thinkers about waves, we need to examine the different ways that waves transfer energy.

I. Do Now
(A quick review on the two types of waves: Transverse Waves, Longitudinal Waves)

II. Earthquakes video.  Complete this worksheet while you watch.

III. Watch this video clip, and this one, and this one.  After viewing, answer these Q's.

IV. Brainpop on earthquakes

V.  Read over this Review on types of seismic waves. Take notes on what you read.

VI. Make your own earthquake with this simulator
Answer these questions after the simulation

VII. Complete the Bitesize seismic waves activity

VIII. Exit Slip
Use Stripgenerator and the 4 vocab terms transverse, longitudinal, wave and transfer of energy to create a comic to show:
1. How P-waves and S-waves transfer energy through earth's crust. Show how they both start and the differences in how they travel.
