Conservation of Momentum
Momentum is transferred from the running elephant to the car. |
Objective:
What: SWBAT Use an equation to find the momentum of a moving object and synthesize 2 situations where momentum is transferred.
How: Students will correctly apply the equation to word problems with 80% accuracy on an exit slip and create a comic strip that shows the transfer of momentum with 80% accuracy.
Why: To be critical thinkers by connecting our prior lessons about the conservation of energy to the conservation of momentum in moving objects and collisions.
Agenda:
1. Do Now - 10 min
2. Momentum videos - 5 min
3. Bill Nye Momentum - 30 min
4. Momentum clips - 10 min
5. Momentum comic strip - 15 min
6. Momentum notes - 10 min
7. White Board Practice - 10 min
8. HW / Exit Slip - 10 min
In boxing, the more mass behind a punch the more momentum.
The momentum of the bowling ball continues in the same direction as the car, and ends up hitting the back windshield off. Momentum from the bowling ball flying through the air is transferred to the car's windshield, which flies off!
The momentum of the water in the water balloon is conserved because the momentum is transferred to his head and to the water moving out in all directions.
